Bringing Cycling to High School Students

With support from Specialized my cycling team has acquired 20 complete bikes and helmets that will be lent out to high school students to participate in a weekly cycling program.  The focus of the program is to have an organized practice once per week where high school students can hone their skills on the Specialized bikes provided to them by the team.  Providing free use of top quality equipment allows kids of all socioeconomic backgrounds to get a taste of the excitement that bike racing creates! We hope that this program will foster a life time interest in the sport of cycling, and in healthy living.

The Goals of the Cycling League are:

  • Introduce high school kids to cycling as a “Lifetime Sport”, or an “activity that contributes to a healthy lifestyle and stresses the importance of physical fitness. This will naturally lend itself to involvement by the average person throughout life” (“Teaching Lifetime Sports” Lawrence F. Butler).
  • Increase the talent pool of American cycling by recruiting high school athletes that would most likely not be exposed to bike racing.
  • Provide opportunities for athletes from lower income demographics the opportunity to try cycling, overcoming the economic barriers of bicycle racing through local support       and involvement.
  • Establish competitive inter-school racing between the 6 area schools in our program!
  • Create a model that can be recreated nationwide.  In the future, our ultimate goal is to have varsity level racing in high schools all across the country.

Please contact me  if you would like to get involved with the program in Athens or if you would like to bring the program to your city!  Please check out the Locos Cycling Team’s homepage for more information  http://locoscyclingteam.com/

Divide for Children

This summer I am rasing money for the Children’s Miracle Network with my friend Parker Smith.  We are raising money by  participating in the Tour Divide which is a fully self-supported mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico.  We race directly through the Rocky Mountains on the Continental Divide Trail where we will encounter over 200,000 feet of climbing!

I am raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network to pay homage to the selflessness of my friends who are far more giving and caring than I.  In a world rife with problems one can often feel powerless.   The actions of one person seem trivial when life constantly washes over us with a sea of problems.  However, every great journey begins with a single step, every great monument begins with a single brick, and every great movement begins with a single inspiration.  This is my step, this is my brick, and this is my inspiration.

So now I implore you, please join us as we take the first step on a journey to make a difference in the world.  Give to the Children’s Miracle Network and help enact real change and create real hope.  Please see our website for more information or to donate http://www.divideforchildren.com/.
